Calls for stricter reforms in embattled solid minerals sector to curb illegal mining  

The Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT), Northern Broadcast Media Owners Association (NBMOA),  has welcomed recent reforms in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, describing them as timely and significant steps toward strengthening the industry, and repositioning the country within the global energy landscape.

The Chairman expressed appreciation for changes in the leadership of key regulatory agencies, noting that the reforms have generated optimism across the oil & gas shipping sector.

In a statement issued yesterday from Cairo, Egypt, he welcomed the appointment of Engr. Sa’idu Aliyu Mohammed as Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, (NMDPRA). 

He said the combination appointment signals the Federal Government’s intention to pursue comprehensive regulatory reforms across the oil and gas value-chain.

NBMOA expressed the view that with capable professionals now leading both the upstream and midstream-downstream regulatory institutions, Nigeria’s oil and gas sector is positioned for improved efficiency, transparency, and long-term growth. 

The Association credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the appointments, describing them as evidence of a commitment to reform.

The organisation stated that sustained reforms are essential to ensure the industry continues to play its central role in supporting Nigeria’s economy. It added that effective regulation is necessary for attracting investment, improving production, and maintaining Nigeria’s relevance in the evolving global energy system.

The Association urged the President to also reform the embattled nigeria’s solid minerals sector in order to create jobs, stimulate local economies, reduce illegal mining , and improve stability in the sector.

The NBMOA concluded by reaffirming its commitment to working with federal and state governments to maintain a peaceful and enabling environment for the solid minerals, oil and gas sector. 

It said it remains ready to mobilise and enlightened the  communities in support of policies that promote sustainable development and economic growth at the host communities levels.
